South Guanacaste

Nicoya, a city to the south, was a vibrant pre-Columbian cultural center for the Chorotegas, a people who were descended from the Olmecs of Mexico. The coastline is irregular with bays, peninsulas and miles of sandy beaches that are the most beautiful in the country. You will also find fascinating natural history, historic sites and picturesque villages. The beaches are lapped by the warm, crystalline waters of the Pacific and several offer protection to marvelous nesting sea turtles. Ostional Beach is a nesting aggregation site for olive ridley sea turtles from July to December each year.
